First Shoot Preparation...

Equipment checklist:
-Rosie's Camera
-My Camera
-Spare batteries
-Spare memory card
-The colleges 550 camera and tape
-A mobile with a large screen
-My apron (for when she first leaves the shop)
-My sharp lighting light
-Any lighting that we can borrow from the college

I also plan on asking Pete (the college technician) to run through a few camera shots with us.

First Shoot...

Today I managed to speak to Taygan so we can go ahead as originally planned. We now plan to shoot on Thursday and I have sent the venue an email as they specified that they need 24hrs notice and hope to hear back fro them shortly.

Mise-en-secen...

I have contacted a lady I used to work for who owns a shabby chic furniture shop asking if we can borrow some of her stock as props for our second location. She has agreed and given us full use of her stock on the proviso nothing gets broken.

I also own some hanging tea light hearts which are a similar colour and can be used to create an atmosphere and mood lighting.

I also have lots of candles that we can use as shown in the footage below from a previous project.

Missed Meeting...

Unfortunately Taygan was unable to meet us on Friday to talk about what needs to be done for the shoot and we have been unsuccessful in being able to contact her again. As the time we have to shoot the video at the first location is nearing an end we have been forced to consider other options as a back up. The first option is to proceed as we were before but the shoot may be very rushed. the second option would be even worse with regards to being ready for the shoot and would involve finding a new act. The final option I have thought of is to shoot the footage at the first location using an 'alter ego' or stand in. Having someone act out the storyline wouldn't be an issue as many other music videos do this. however we would still need Taygan to be in the instrumental footage at the second location otherwise I feel the video won't look as professional.

Other Artwork Ideas...

"The Girl With The Red Balloon" by Banksy is one of my favourite images and has been the inspiration for a similar cover featuring our act Taygan as the little girl. The image would show taygan letting go of the red balloon that has been edited in photoshop to resemble my initial heart sketch. I also like the texture of the wall in the background so if I was to proceed with this idea I would use a similar set or apply it using photoshop. Many of the album covers I analysed had a sepia tone so I would probably do the same. The composition would be relevant as the balloon signifies love, and letting it go- which is what the protagonist in our video has to do. As the image is iconic and well known it will catch potential shoppers attention and opens the song up to the world of street art as potential fans.
Conceptual photography is my favourite style of photography as it is often clever and thought-provokeing which makes it ideal for an album cover as it is more appealing.

First Sketch...

After looking at various album art work I decided to sketch a heart as on possibility for the album cover. Originally I drew a conventional heart.

However I din't feel it was different enough so I decided to combine the image of a real human heart and the symbolic shape of a heart.
As the song is called "Wait For Love" I plan to see how I can introduce a clock into the artwork. My first idea is to have the heart weighed down -as if it were a ballon- by the clock hanging from a string. There is also the possibility with this idea to have multiple copies of the 'clock hanging image' in various sizes creating depth in a sketched city scape.

Music Video Analysis- "Little Lion Man"...

"Little Lion Man" by Mumford and Sons
Original Video
My analysis of the video
((((Video coming soon))))

Script:
“Little Lion Man” by Mumford and Sons is an indie song, which is set in a singular location unlike the previous video I analysed (“Little Talks”). However I feel that this hasn’t greatly impacted the videos ability to entertain as the short takes and fast cuts help convey the energy in the performance.
The video opens with an establishing shot showing an empty stage, thus setting the scene for the concert. The set is very dark with low-key lighting creating a sharp contrast between the dark and light areas, therefore drawing the viewer’s focus to the brightly lit stage and framing the bands performance with shadows- producing a sense of intimacy. The contrasting light balance creates silhouettes introducing a moody atmosphere to the film. The clever lighting used transforms an otherwise dull set into a space of artistic beauty.
Nevertheless the stage is decorated in a minimalist style with fairy lights that flash synchronously to the music highlighting the changes in tempo to the viewer- breaking up the song and adding interest. This use of parallel sound is also present in the speed of cuts, which quicken and slow dependant on the pace of the song. The sound is diegetic as the video is essentially a staged performance with no storyline; making the viewers concentrate on the lyrics whilst not detracting form the song. This is especially important to Mumford and Son’s demographic as many fans commented under the original music video that they liked that fact that Mumford and Sons produced music that is simple and not auto-tuned.
Despite the fact that no plot is being played out there is very little direct address through direct eye contact with the camera. Many of the shots showing the band themselves (in respect to the for mentioned) are too distant or are side profiles. The video as whole is a montage of the performance and the instruments being played. A large proportion of the screen time is given to individual close ups of band members and them playing the instruments.  This helps create diversity in the footage rather than just focusing on the band members themselves. These shots are cross cut with master shots that show the entire band connoting a united ethos as the band members are equidistant from each other. Using long shots also put the viewer in the perspective of an onlooker at the venue involving them in the performance to a greater degree.
There is a lot of movement in the footage which constantly changes the framing keeping the viewer enticed. Often the pans and tilts pivot around the band giving a 360 perspective this reiterates the idea that the band are the crux of tis video. This shot is unusual in generic performance music videos but is very dynamic and interesting.
Frequently the intensity of the lighting flickers and is heightened forming over exposed footage and glare. Many of the music videos I have watched also employ this technique as it is very emotive and forms more aesthetically pleasing imagery/ effects.
Finally the band are dressed in casual formal wear which is a-typical of indie style clothing in music videos following industry stereotypes.

Music Video Analysis- "Little Talks"...

"Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men
Original Video
My analysis of the video.

Script:
“Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men is an animated video seeming to draw inspiration from art house cinema. A mixture of both photographic and illustrated images are combined together to create a more mature looking animation. This ensures that the video appeals to the bands target audience (13years+ approx.) and doesn’t come across as childish, which would taint the songs appeal.
The quirky plot with adventurous elements helps captivate the viewer by taping into their imagination- encouraging them to engage more in the video. The video takes place in multiple fantasy lands that are visually rich, with detailed landscapes inspired by extreme places in the real world. Each land is obviously different despite the use of de-saturated colour throughout the video. The huge variance in location absorbs the viewer in the aesthetics of the video as it gives the viewer the same sense of discovery the protagonists (band) feel as each new land is shown. This makes the use of master shots in the film crucial as it clearly establishes spatial relations between characters and identifies new lands clearly. Lots of diverse shots are used in the video to intensify the onscreen energy.
The dark tone of the video and connoted feelings of cold, mystery and danger, are ever-present; yet the magical girl and any good in the footage is visually represented in an overpoweringly vibrant, spectrum of colours. This highlights the strong contrast between good and evil the video plays on.
The antagonist creatures are often oversized and loom over the band but are always defeated by the girl who is still small in comparison to them but is presented as more powerful.
Strong parallels can be seen between the mise-en-scene, (in particular the costume and make-up) and tribal artwork. The band remains completely de-saturated and wears thick, powdery face paint in tribal style. Where as the magical girl wears a floaty, swirling dress and head piece full of colour. They both have very theatrical make up but the band’s is very simple and the girl’s is very bright and complex.
The band’s walking is very jerky and on beat exaggerating the puppet-like movement and animated style. Parallel sound is key to this video as all the action compliments the song and a lot of the movement is synchronous to the track. For example as the song slows in tempo during a sound bridge the characters fall into an underwater world and the footage becomes slow motion to replicate the idea that they are floating.
The special effects in the footage aim to amplify the magical element of the video. The explosions of colour when a creature is defeated heighten the action and excitement as well as being visually impressive. On the other hand the inky effect connotes a shadowy danger undoubtedly identifying the creatures as threatening. There is a lot of movement in the creature designs, which makes them more artistically impressive and eye-catching.

Mise-en-scene & Second location...

We have started to discuss mise-en-scene in particular what Taygan should wear e.g. formal/casual/dress/jeans etc. But as we don't know what Taygan feels comfortable in, or her style, so we have arranged to meet her this Friday to sort out clothing and discuss when is best to shoot the video. Today we also though about possibilities for a second location as many of the videos we watched had multiple locations to add interest and break up the monotony. Possible locations include:

  • Farnham colleges new drama/dance studio
-which has a good natural lighting and a mirrored wall which can be used to create interesting shots e.g. reflections etc.
  • Guildford colleges T.V. studio

-which has multiple lighting possibilites and is set up specifically for filming.

In the first location (shopping centre) Taygan will be acting out a story that is cohesive with the song but in the second location she will be in more of a musician role with a strong focus on her playing the guitar.
Other props thought about for the second location include the use of candles but we have to look into the health and safety implications (fire alarms). Guildford colleges TV studio is well ventilated, as they wanted to be able to shoot cooking shows there, so the candles wont be an issue- but there is no large mirror. But the drama department don't usually use candles so this may be a defining issue.

Plot
The general plot thesis so far is that Taygan has finished work and that she is waiting to be picked up by her boyfriend who originally is just running late: hence the song title "Wait for Love. This will coincide with montaged footage of Taygan playing her guitar at the second location. But at the end of the video he will send her a text saying that he can't make it. Although this will make the over-all tone of the video sad by keeping up the pace of the video and; using varied shots and angles, hopefully the video will remain interesting.

The first location...

We now have the shopping centre after-hours as the first location for our music video and Taygan is happy to film at night/ in the evening. The only issue is that the shopping centres christmas lights are being put up on the 15/17th of october so ideally we would need to shoot the footage we need before then giving us a tight time frame.

Finding a location...

To give us ideas for our project we started to look at similar media texts including music videos from artists of a similar genre. This gave us lots of ideas as to what we would like to do. I felt that securing a 'different' location was key to producing a professional looking music video. This lead me to speak to a lady from Hart Shopping Centre about the possibility of using the centre -once it had closed for the evening- as a location for part of the video.

Taygan said that she prefers to sing "Wait for Love" so that is now the chosen song for the video.

http://soundcloud.com/taygan/wait-for-love

Taygan also said that she is happy to leave the video up to us, but obviously we will be asking for her input and whether she likes our ideas. :)

Questionnaire Results...

Below are the findings from my questionnaire analysis. "(non genre)" means the members of the sample who don't like the singer/ songwriter genre or indie music as one of their three choices in question 3. CLICK on the images for a larger view.

1.What gender are you?

I asked a 49:51 split of males to females so that my finding show a fair representation.

2.What age bracket do you fall in?
All of my sample are aged between 13 and 24 as statistically this is the age range who watch music videos the most making my findings more accurate.

3. What genres of music do you like the most?
(Choose 3 numbering them 1[favourite] to 3)
I tried to ask people in the Singer/ Songwriter genre or the indie genre primarily as that is the genre I am interested in for the purposes of this project. Furthermore Taygan falls into the singer/ songwriter genre so qualitative information form fans of this genre is the most relevant. However many people listen to multiple genres and often songs are liked by people outside of there primal genre- so it is important that I collate information from other people.

4.How often do you watch music videos?
Most of my sample watch music videos once a week showing that there is a potential viewership for my video and that music videos play a vital part in the exposure of a song.

5.What mediums do you watch music videos on?
79% of my over all sample watch music videos on music channels. Most of the videos shown on music channels are part of a chart run through so often the song is being feature not because it has a good music video but because the song is popular. The less well known acts (like Taygan) would first be advertised on YouTube where the hype about a video is first generated typically.

6.What style of music video do you prefer?
94% of my over all sample prefer real footage as apposed to animated footage. As a result I will definitely make a video using real footage as it will appeal more to my target audience who made up 93% of that majority. Additionally I feel I will create a more professional looking and better quality video if it is real footage- as I don't have access to the technology needed to make any other style of animation other then stock-motion. I personally feel that stock-motion is not suitable for my particular music video and that it can sometimes look childish, which -from my "Little Talks" music video analysis- I know is key.

7.Do you prefer a music video with a storyline?
Most of my sample prefer a music video with some form of storyline as it adds interest. Those that didn't still wanted the footage to be vaguely relevant to the song or at least follow a theme. I hope to include a storyline in my video as it helps to have something to work from and I believe it is more attention-grabbing.

8.Do you prefer the artist/ band to feature in the video?
The majority of the sample prefer the artist to feature in the video. Conventionally the band/artist of a music video do feature as key characters but in some videos like Ed Sheeran's "Lego House" the main character is played by someone else. What is particularly clever about the "Lego House" video is that Rupert Grint is the main character. Not only does this ensure that the acting is of a high quality but it introduces Ed Sheeran's music to Ruperts/ Harry Potter fans. However as we can't get celebrity endorsement of this kind it would be better if we just featured our artist. Ideally we would like Taygan to feature in our video as she is not a well-known act so would benefit form the publicity.

9.Do you prefer colour/ black& white/ or sepia?
63% of my entire sample preferred full colour videos. Although 36% liked black and white videos -claiming they were more emotive- the lack of vibrancy can seem depressing. I personally would like to shoot in full colour so that i can take advantage of more camera effects. Although you can still use sun glare and pull focus in black and white I don't feel it looks as impressive. However I am open to creating a black and white video it depends what looks best when we have shot the video.

10. Do you prefer multiple settings of just one?
The evidence suggests that using more than one location is better as it makes for more interesting viewing. Rosie and I hope to use more than one location as it gives us wider possibilities and creative freedom when it comes to our video.

11. Should the video, album and magazine advertisement for the album look similar?
It was roughly a half and half split so I don't feel like its a necessity but many of the participants did say that the album and magazine advertisement for the album should look similar. Usually the album cover is just a cropped image of the advertisement so i plan on doing something similar.

12.Do you prefer album covers that feature the artist/ an alternative photo/ or that are illustrated?
The majority of my sample prefer album artwork that features the artist however a large proportion also like illustrated images. Therefore I believe either would be appropriate as long as they were in-keeping with the track and/ or the conventional style of the genre.

We have an artist...

Taygan has agreed to work with us so now we have to choose the right song and find out what Taygan wants from the video. After speaking to Taygan via email we have come up with a short list of songs:
1. "Wait for Love"
2. "Red Balloons"

Questionare...

1    I created a questionnaire to help me identify the needs and wants of my target audience so that I can produce a professional looking and well suited music video.
I plan on only asking people between the ages of 13 and 24 so that all the information I collect will be relevant as I know form general research that music videos are stereotypically watched by that age bracket. I plan on asking roughly 100 people and aim to ask a 50:50 split of males to females to get the most accurate results.
